2) Design and build your boat at HOME. Boat Building Design Rules and Regulations:

  • Boats must made at home BEFORE THE RACE.
  • Boats must be made of ONLY cardboard and duct tape. NO reinforced cardboard tubes. Cardboard cannot be sealed with any paint or sealants. Please note, this is a requirement of WCRA to protect the pool.
  • Any surface of the boat designed to touch the water must be completely covered in duct tape.
  • Duct tape can be of varying colors but must come manufactured in that color.
  • Boats must be able to comfortably fit within a swim lane without interfering with competitors. Avoid building larger than 4 ft wide or 6 ft long.
  • Boats must be able to hold the driver(s) without limbs dangling in the water (no kick rafts)
  • One paddle per driver is permitted, but it must be made entirely out of cardboard and duct tape. Cardboard tubes are permitted for paddles only.
  • Paddles cannot interfere with competitors (avoid excessively long paddles)
  • The crew compartment of the boat CANNOT be enclosed so it will not interfere with escape.
  • Design is builders’ choice, get creative and let your imagination run wild!

3) Race!

Race Format:

  • Check in your boat between 5:00pm – 5:30pm at WCRA
  • Participants will start out of the water at the edge of the pool with their boat out of the water.
  • The race begins on the whistle at which time participants, with the help of teammates or parents, will place their boat in the water, get on board and race to the other side of the pool.
  • Swimming and/or pulling of the boat, or use of the wall or other boats is not permitted.
  • The first to touch the other side of the pool, either with their boat or hand (a paddle does not count) wins.
  • Multiple heats are expected with groupings based on number of entries and driver age.
  • For two-team boats the age of the oldest driver will be used to determine heat placement.

4) Awards
This race is all about FUN! But we will give out a few awards at conclusion of the final heat, including:

  • Individual Heat Winners
  • Most Clever Boat Design
  • Silliest Boat Design
  • Best Team Name
